Kalimantan island is one of the 5 main islands that exist in the Indonesian Archipelago. Among all the archipelagoes in the world, Indonesia has got the larges one.
2/3 of the island of Borneo is Indonesian territory and has a total area of 539,460 sqare Kms. The uniqueness of this island is the capital city of West Kalimantan lies exactly on the equator. Pontianak is the only city in the world which has its specialty. An equator monument is built by people to remain the position of the city. Geography cally Kalimantan is divided into 4 provinces.
There are the central south west and provinces which have their own governor.
Since the land consists of rivers and jungles through all the 4 provinces Kalimantan have only 10 million in habitants. Most of the people are Moslims but there are also Christians, Hindus and Buddhas.
Kalimantan area is mostly covered by thick tropical forest and many rivers are scattered through out the country.
The rivers serves as substantial arteries for transportation in this island like the Mahakam River. Kapuas river, Barito river, and Rejang river, but on the island of Java the rivers are very important as mean for irrigation.
Most of the inhabitants live on the river, there have a unique traditional live on the river. In South Kalimantan you can admire a floating market ehich has attractive many domestic visitors as well foreigners and state officials. Trade in held in this market all the whole salers gather and by products and crops from the famous of the surrounding villagers. The Dayak’s territorial in East Kalmantan on the river of Mahakam give you another exotic impression of the region.
Kalimantan has densely jangles but in East Kalimantan, Kersik Luwe is place well-known for the black orchid forest which is super visit by the Nature Preservation and Concervation Direktorate. This orchid bloom as between September and December.
Other famous commodities of the forest and Meranti wood, Plywood, Rattan, Tobacco, Rubber which are also exported to overseas.
For the fauna, many interesting animals are worthy to note such as the fresh water dolphin, the proboscis monkey, the Pesut, the Orang Utan.
Specially for the Orang Utan which is strongly protected, there have an Orang Utan rehabilitation center in central Kalimantan since this animal is very dependant on primary forest habitat. In West Kalimantan, there is a special place for breeding turtles, crocodiles and shrimps.
